Uganda to construct 2000MW nuclear energy plant by 2030

Luwalira said that cabinet has already approved the proposal of sites on which to construct a nuclear power plant has been spotted in two districts of Buyende and Kiyihura but technicians are still researching on the best of the two.

KAMPALA | In efforts to fight the electricity deficit in the county, government is planning to construct a nuclear energy power plant of over 2000MW by 2030.

This has been sounded by Deogratius Luwalira, the executive director of Atomic Energy Council (AEC), while addressing journalists in Kampala on Monday during the Media Sensitisation Workshop on the Regulation of Atomic Energy Applications in Uganda.

The workshop was organised by AEC to equip them with knowledge about Atomic Energy.

Luwalira said that cabinet has already approved the proposal of sites on which to construct a nuclear power plant has been spotted in two districts of Buyende and Kiyihura but technicians are still researching on the best of the two.

"In the nuclear Power Plant al Professionals will benefit, it is a project for the whole country.

It is Producing electricity which will be transmitted for any part of the country that is in need so it's not linked to any region only that it is located in those scientifically selected sites.

"And so far the districts to house those power plants are two, Buyende and Kiruhura., it is strengthening the regulatory authority- the atomic energy council that is going to regulate this nuclear power plant," Luwalira said.

Luwalira adds that Uganda being a developing country it has a lot of challenges with electricity yet there some ways to stop it even without destroying environment .

Meanwhile, Luwalira advised journalists to educate the public to desist from seeking radiotherapy services in hospitals not licensed to give those services because they can get a lot of problems such as cancer, blindness among others.
